The Black Dread is a large, hard map measuring 108 by 108, played entirely above ground. An Ice Age has settled over the north, and the necromancer Balerion is seizing its lands while nearby rivals ignore warnings of war. The player must first defeat these neighbors before turning to the greater threat with the southern kingdoms behind them. Six players take part, with at most five controlled by humans, and the Purple side is computer-only. No teams are used. Factions include Fortress, Tower, Dungeon, Rampart, Castle, and, for Purple, Inferno and Necropolis. Grass and snow cover most of the land, with water making up about nine percent. Wandering forces include a Black Dragon, an Archangel, and a Mage, and the map holds ten towns and 52 mines. Victory requires defeating all enemies, and a player loses by losing every town and hero.
