Every scenario map downloaded from our archive arrives as a .h3m file. To play it, place the uncompressed .h3m file into the Maps\ folder of your game directory.
1. The Maps Directory
In Heroes of Might and Magic III, custom scenarios are placed in the Maps\ subfolder located inside your main game folder:
<Your-Game-Folder>\Maps\As documented in community guides (such as heroes3wog.net), scenarios and custom folders are copied directly into the “Heroes 3 Maps folder”.
Maps\ directory inside your Complete game folder.2. Edition Compatibility & Format Breakdown
Maps whose format is Restoration of Erathia (RoE) run on any game version (2,771 maps in our archive). The remaining 5,629 maps require expansions or modifications (2,860 Shadow of Death, 1,185 Armageddon’s Blade, 1,137 WoG, and 447 Horn of the Abyss).
Because expansions introduce new terrain types, artifacts, and hero mechanics, older base editions cannot read scenario files created in newer formats.
3. How to Open and Play Your Map In-Game
- Launch the Game: Start Heroes III as you normally do.
- Navigate to Scenario Selection: From the main menu, click New Game → Single Player (or Multi-Player) → Scenario.
- Select Your Scenario: Find the map by its scenario name in the scenario list.
Troubleshooting Common Issues
- Map Does Not Appear in List: Ensure the file has a
.h3mextension and is not compressed inside a.zipor.rararchive. If the file is compressed, extract the.h3mfirst. - Windows Permission Errors: As noted in Question 27 of the HotA FAQ, running games installed inside
Program Filescan sometimes cause permission blocks. If new files cannot be written or seen, launch your game or file explorer as Administrator. - Version Mismatch: If a map was created in a newer format (for example, HotA 1.8.0), an older game client (such as standard SoD) cannot read the header and will ignore the file. Verify that your game version matches the required version displayed on the map page.
