The Black Dread is a hard, large surface map of 108 by 108 tiles for up to five human players, with one additional computer-only purple side. Set during a sudden Ice Age, it has the player's kingdom first subduing neighboring realms that ignore warnings of war, before turning to Balerion, the necromancer conquering the north. Six colors compete without teams, with Fortress, Tower, Dungeon, Rampart, and Castle among the factions, and purple fielding Inferno and Necropolis. Victory requires defeating all enemies, while a player loses by losing every town and hero. The land is mostly grass and snow, with water covering about nine percent. Ten towns, fifty-two mines, and strong wandering monsters such as an Archangel and a Black Dragon add to the challenge, and artifacts like the Crown of the Supreme Magi await discovery.
