In Search of the Phoenix is a large underground map measuring 108 by 108, built for Shadow of Death and set on Expert difficulty. Its premise centers on a golden-flamed bird that vanished under strange circumstances, a mystery the author suggests heroes may succeed where others did not. Five players take part, with two human seats and three computer-only colors, grouped into four teams. The factions are Rampart, Dungeon, Conflux, Castle, and Stronghold. Victory requires capturing one specific town, and a player is eliminated by losing all towns and heroes. The land is mostly rock and rough ground, with grass and snow making up the rest and no water. Nineteen towns and eight named artifacts, including Armageddon's Blade and the Golden Bow, are placed across the map, and several dragon stacks roam it.
