The Fragmented Kingdom is an extra large Shadow of Death map measuring 144 by 144 tiles, with underground levels and an Expert difficulty setting. A once prosperous continent has been split by a volcano, several lords have broken away, and the King's Fort is under threat while the monarch has vanished. Seven players take part, with up to two human players and five computer-only colors, and there are no teams. Factions include Castle, Tower, Rampart, Stronghold, Inferno and Necropolis. Victory requires defeating a specific hero, and the game is lost if time runs out after 252 days. Rock covers about a third of the map and water about a quarter, with lava and grass making up smaller shares. The map holds 30 towns, 88 mines and the Grail, along with scattered artifacts such as the Orb of the Firmament and the Pendant of Life.
