When Champions Fail is a small 36x36 surface map for Heroes of Might and Magic III: Shadow of Death, rated hard. Its premise, drawn from the author's description, is that a marauding red dragon named Firefang has killed every knight in the kingdom, leaving commoners to take up the fight. The map supports two players, with one human seat and one computer-controlled Red player who plays Castle, while the other side is random. There are no teams. Grass covers most of the land, with water, swamp and rough ground making up much of the rest. Two towns, three heroes, a mine, four seer huts, two creature banks and a mix of wandering monsters are scattered across it, along with a range of placed artifacts. Victory requires defeating a specific monster, and a player loses by losing all towns and heroes.
