Shield and Sword is an Extra Large 144 by 144 map with an underground level, designed for eight players, all of whom can be human. There are no teams, each player starts with a random faction, and the goal is to defeat all enemies. A player loses by losing all towns and heroes. The author's note says the title explains itself, and the map is dated 23 August 2006. Water covers about 31 percent of the surface, and rough ground, rock, and snow cover much of the rest. The map has 48 towns, 15 placed heroes, 121 mines, 94 creature banks, and 26 monoliths and portals. Sea serpents, great shamans, and royal griffins are among the most common wandering stacks, and 18 seer huts offer quests.
