Butterfly Effect is an Extra Large map of 144 by 144 tiles with an underground level, set on Impossible difficulty for the Shadow of Death expansion. Eight players share the field, but only three seats can be human, and the five computer colors play without teams. The factions are Castle, Rampart, Tower, Inferno, Dungeon, and Conflux. Snow covers about two thirds of the terrain, water roughly a fifth, and grass a small share. The author's description portrays a butterfly that emerges through hardship and grows stronger, and the map is meant to reward persistence. Victory requires defeating all enemies, and a player loses when every town and hero is gone. The map holds 31 towns, 122 mines, a Grail, and wandering stacks of Skeleton Warriors, Vampire Lords, and Green Dragons, along with placed artifacts such as the Armor of Wonder.
