Return of the Hero is a single-player Shadow of Death map on an extra large 144 by 144 grid with an underground level. According to its description, the peace in this world lasted only a few days before demons returned from the netherworld, forcing the hero to set out again. One Castle player, controlled by a single human, starts on Normal difficulty with no teams and no computer opponents. Rock covers about 44 percent of the land and water about 34 percent. The map contains five towns, eleven mines, thirteen creature banks, and eighteen monoliths and portals, along with roaming Infernal Troglodytes, Medusa Queens, and Magogs, plus fifteen placed artifacts, including the Crown of Dragontooth. Victory requires acquiring a specific artifact, and losing a particular hero ends the game.
