There are no fixed teams. The story, as the description puts it, follows northern kingdoms that keep fighting one another until a larger threat arrives from the south, the Nilfgaardian Empire, which plays as Purple and is the strongest opponent. Factions range from Rampart, Tower, and Castle to Inferno, Necropolis, Dungeon, and Fortress. Players win by defeating all enemies and lose by losing every town and hero. Rock covers about half the terrain and water about 15 percent. The map holds 26 towns, 84 mines, 32 creature banks, and artifacts such as the Sword of Hellfire and the Golden Bow.
