Actala is a large underground map measuring 108 by 108 tiles, set on an isle that players must hold against rivals. It supports four colors, with up to two played by humans, and the two teams pit Red and Blue, both Castles, against the computer-controlled Tan Fortress and Green Necropolis. Rock covers much of the terrain, with water making up a quarter of the surface and grass and swamp filling the rest. The map holds eleven towns and five placed heroes, and it scatters wandering stacks of Water Elementals, Wraiths, Troglodytes, and other creatures across the land. Eleven artifacts are placed by hand, including the Sword of Hellfire and the Endless Sack of Gold, alongside fifteen random ones. A player wins by defeating all enemies and loses by losing every town and hero.
