The Duel is a two-player map for Shadow of Death, set on a medium 72 by 72 underground level rated hard. The author's description frames it as a rivalry: a neighbor has taken a maiden and holds her within your own land, and the goal is to find her and free her, with a reward from Poseidon in the form of water elementals and a helmet. Rock covers about half the terrain, with grass and water making up most of the rest. Each of the two players is a single human-controllable side, with no teams and random factions for both. Victory requires defeating every enemy, and a player loses after losing all towns and heroes. Four towns and two starting heroes are placed, along with a scattering of wandering monsters, 56 random monster stacks, creature banks, mines, and placed artifacts such as the Endless Sack of Gold and Recanter's Cloak.
