The War (Shadow) is a large underground-enabled map of 108 by 108 tiles, set on five lands: four surface countries and one cave beneath them. Each of the four players rules one of these realms and starts with a single hero, with up to four humans able to take part. Players form two teams, and every faction is assigned at random. Victory requires defeating all enemies, while a player is eliminated once they lose every town and hero. The map is rated Expert and is mostly rock, with grass, sand and snow making up much of the rest and very little water. Scattered across it are ten towns, wandering monster stacks, ten kinds of dwelling creatures, nine placed artifacts, mines, creature banks, and several monoliths and portals.
