The Neverending Story is an Extra Large 144 by 144 map for Shadow of Death with an underground level, rated Expert and built for four players, all of whom may be human. Each player controls a different faction: Dungeon for Red, Stronghold for Blue, Inferno for Green and Necropolis for Purple. There are no teams, and victory comes from defeating every enemy, while a player loses once all towns and heroes are gone. The author's story frames the map as a quest to find the Queen of Fantasia before a final catastrophe. Rock covers nearly half the surface, with water, grass and snow making up the rest. Notable features include wandering monsters such as an Azure Dragon, Phoenix and Magma Elemental, dwellings for Crystal and Faerie Dragons, and a large number of artifacts scattered across the land.
