The Lost Hope is an Extra Large 144 by 144 Shadow of Death map with an underground level, set at Expert difficulty. Five players take part, but only one can be human, and the other four colors are computer-only. No teams are set. The Orange seat is the human slot and starts with a Dungeon town, Blue, Purple and Teal each receive a mix of factions, and Red is random. Victory requires defeating all enemies, and a player loses by losing every town and hero. Rock covers about 37 percent of the terrain, with snow, water and swamp making up much of the rest. The map holds many mines, monoliths and portals, the Grail, and twelve placed artifacts such as Titan's Thunder. The author's text describes a restless pursuit of supreme power driven by rivalry and greed.
