Red and Blue each start with Castle and Rampart, while the six computer-only colors each field a single faction: Fortress, Conflux, Stronghold, Inferno, Dungeon, and Necropolis. Grass covers much of the land, with water, snow, and swamp making up the rest. Victory requires capturing a specific town, and a player is defeated after losing all towns and heroes. The map holds 48 towns, four starting heroes, 128 mines, and the Grail, along with 38 random artifacts and placed relics such as the Orb of Silt and the Pendant of Courage. Wandering monsters, creature banks, and seven seer huts add many encounters.
