The Fire is a medium underground map of 72 by 72 tiles, rated hard, for four players with up to two human participants. The two human-controllable colors are Red, playing Inferno, and Blue, playing Necropolis. The two computer-only colors, Green with Rampart and Orange with Castle, are allied against them, and the teams split along those lines. Victory requires defeating every enemy, and a player loses by losing all towns and heroes. The terrain is mostly rock, with water covering about a fifth of the surface, along with grass and lava. Wandering monsters include water and fire elementals, battle dwarves, and vampire lords, and the map holds ten towns, fifty-six mines, and twelve monoliths and portals. Several named artifacts are placed around it, such as the Crown of Dragontooth and the Dragon Scale Shield.
