The Big War! is an extra large underground map for Shadow of Death, measuring 144 by 144 and played across both the surface and the underworld. Up to six players can take part, with five slots open to humans and one reserved for the computer, and there are no fixed teams. Red plays Inferno, Blue Fortress, Tan Stronghold, Green Castle, Teal Tower, and Pink Necropolis. Victory comes from defeating all enemies, and a player is eliminated after losing all towns and heroes. The author's description frames it as a tense balance between the Elemental Lords, Good, Evil and Neutrality, with the Evil forces starting strongly but confined underground. Players will find 28 towns, 19 heroes, 143 mines, and a Grail. Wandering Diamond Golems and Arch Devils are among the monsters, and fifteen artifacts are placed by hand.
