Each player uses one of seven factions: Stronghold, Castle, Rampart, Inferno, Tower, Dungeon, or Necropolis. The story follows a long-running feud among three stepdaughters of King Pendrag, which erupts into open conflict after strange events at Pendrag Lair. Victory requires defeating all enemies, and a player loses by losing all towns and heroes. The terrain is mostly rough, lava, grass, and snow, with about seven percent water. Notable features include 45 towns, 130 mines, and the Crest of Valor and Still Eye of the Dragon among the placed artifacts.
