Shadow of Life is a hard, large map measuring 108 by 108 tiles for Shadow of Death, with an underground level alongside the surface. The two heroes must take control of a nearby archipelago, both above and below ground, following a royal decree that reshuffles Erathia's commanders. Eight players are divided into three teams, with up to two human players and six computer-only colors. Some colors field Inferno, Necropolis, Stronghold and Fortress, others Rampart, Tower, Dungeon and Conflux, and the last two play Castle. Victory requires defeating all enemies, and a player loses by losing every town and hero. Water covers about 16 percent of the map, and 38 towns, 56 monoliths and portals, and 37 Water Elemental stacks shape its layout.
