Eight players take part, but only one can be human, and the other seven are computer-controlled. There are no teams, and each color plays a different faction, from Inferno and Castle to Necropolis and Rampart. The story begins after the death of Moor, god of souls, when demons and archdevils struggle for his place, and one figure hopes to claim Moor's fire book, the Pyrosium. Victory means acquiring that specific artifact, and a player is defeated by losing all towns and heroes. Water covers about 36 percent of the terrain, and the map holds 19 towns, 65 mines, and 15 creature banks, with wandering Medusas, Grand Elves, and Diamond Golems roaming the land.
