Return to the Empire is a small expert-level map measuring 36 by 36 tiles, with an underground level. It supports four players, up to two of them human, and the Green and Orange colors are computer-only. Two teams face each other, with Rampart, Fortress, Necropolis, and Dungeon factions in play. According to the description, raiders from below destroyed a kingdom, and allies from eastern swamps later drove them back underground. The player must rebuild and unite forces to defeat the underground evil. Victory requires defeating all enemies, and a player loses by losing all towns and heroes. The terrain is mostly grass, swamp, rough, and rock, with about 7 percent water. Highlights include 26 mines, four monoliths and portals, and the Grail.
