Journey to the Center of the Earth is a large map measuring 108 by 108 tiles, with an underground level and an Expert difficulty rating. Up to one human player can join seven computer-controlled colors, for eight players split into three teams. Two players use Tower and Stronghold, three use Dungeon, and the remaining three play Rampart, Castle, and Necropolis. The setting is an unexplored southern land of volcanic mountains, with rock covering about a quarter of the terrain and water a similar share. Victory requires defeating all enemies, and the human player loses if a specific hero is defeated. Notable features include the Grail, 21 towns, 72 mines, eight monoliths and portals, and 15 creature banks, plus artifacts such as the Crown of the Supreme Magi and Dragon Scale Armor.
