Pirate Lords is a large underground map of 108 by 108 tiles, set on a chain of islands ruled by sea-trading outlaws whose outposts the player must seize, along with their ships and property. The map supports five players, with one human seat and four computer-controlled colors, arranged into three teams. Factions include Rampart, Inferno, Fortress and Necropolis, and the player must defeat all enemies to win, while losing a specific hero ends the game. Levels are capped at 28, and the map is rated Expert. Rock covers about 38 percent of the surface and water about 24 percent, with grass and dirt making up much of the rest. Nine towns, thirteen heroes, sixty mines and fourteen creature banks are scattered across the islands, along with artifacts such as the Cape of Conjuring and the Talisman of Mana, plus five monoliths and portals and twelve timed events.
