Shadows of the Middle Ages is an Extra Large underground map measuring 144 by 144 tiles, recommended for the Impossible difficulty and made for Horn of the Abyss. Eight players take part, with up to five human-controlled and Tan, Orange and Purple reserved for the computer. There are no teams. Red, Blue, Tan and Green each start with two factions, while Orange, Purple, Teal and Pink start with one. The author sets the map in Europe, with Vikings beginning their journeys as monarchs compete for neighboring lands. Victory requires defeating all enemies, and a player is eliminated after losing every town and hero. Rock covers nearly half the map and water about a quarter. The map holds 38 towns, 66 mines, 32 creature banks and four monoliths or portals, along with wandering dragons and elementals.
