Middle Earth is an extra large, 144 by 144 map with an underground level, rated Hard, for three players of whom two can be human, with the third slot reserved for the computer. Players take the roles of Necropolis for Red, Rampart for Blue, and a Tower and Stronghold combination for the computer-only Tan. There are no fixed teams. Victory comes from transporting a specific artifact, the ring, while a player loses by losing all towns and heroes. Rock covers the largest share of the terrain, followed by dirt, with water and grass making up the rest. The map holds four towns, nine placed heroes, 27 mines, and fifteen named artifacts, and a range of wandering monsters such as ogres, green dragons and orc chieftains. Dwellings offer creatures from several factions, and the author frames the game as a head-to-head contest between the Dark Minions and the Free Peoples.
