Maltese Cross is an Extra Large Shadow of Death map measuring 144 by 144, with an underground level and Normal difficulty. Eight colors are present, up to seven of them human-controlled, and Purple is computer-only. There are no teams. Most players begin as Castle, while Purple also has Inferno and Necropolis. Victory requires defeating one specific hero, and a player loses by losing all towns and heroes. Water covers about a third of the map, with rock, subterranean ground and grass making up most of the rest. Notable features include 34 towns, 50 mines, 37 monoliths and portals, and the Grail, plus Greater Basilisk and Power Lich stacks roaming the land. The author describes a once-peaceful crossroads threatened by an approaching evil empire.
