Война миров: Начало is a medium 72 by 72 map with an underground level, rated Hard, for eight players who can all be human, with no teams. Each player controls one of eight factions: Castle, Rampart, Tower, Stronghold, Inferno, Necropolis, Dungeon, or Fortress. The author describes eight rival states packed into a compact area, each trying to raise an army, break through its neighbours' borders, and wipe out the others. Victory requires defeating all enemies, and a player loses once all towns and heroes are gone. Subterranean, dirt, water, and grass make up most of the terrain, with water covering about a fifth of the map. Seventeen towns and seventeen heroes are placed, along with about 245 random artifacts, 108 mines, 12 seer huts, 7 creature banks, and two monoliths or portals, plus wandering water elementals and dragons.
