The Joke Is Also a Long Way Off is a Normal-difficulty underground map on a medium 72 by 72 grid, built for six players, all of whom can be human, with no teams. Each player controls a different faction, from Stronghold and Tower to Inferno. Victory comes from defeating all enemies, and a side is eliminated once it loses every town and hero. The story centers on the Entertainment guild's capital, Slapknee, in Erathia, which has become the site of a dispute over the future of comedy. Rock and dirt cover most of the terrain, with grass and water making up the rest. The map holds eight towns, the Grail, Angel Wings, 40 random artifacts, 40 mines, and 35 timed events, along with many wandering monsters and dwellings.
