The Lord of the Rings is a large Heroes of Might and Magic III map of 108 by 108 tiles, played on a level that includes an underground layer and rated for expert players. Six starting positions are set up, with three open to human players and three held by the computer, split into two teams. Factions include Tower, Castle, Necropolis, Stronghold, Rampart, Inferno and Dungeon, and the terrain is mostly rock and grass with water covering about a sixth of the land. Victory requires defeating every enemy, and a player loses once all towns and heroes are gone. The map is scattered with 31 towns, 102 mines and a Grail, plus prisons, creature banks, dwellings and a wide range of placed artifacts.
