Hydra's Lair is a small underground map of 36 by 36 tiles for two players, with only one human seat and no teams. The player takes the Rampart side against a computer-controlled Inferno opponent. The main goal is to defeat a specific monster, a Throng Hydra that dwells in the caverns, while the clock runs out after 84 days. The landscape mixes grass, rock, and subterranean ground, with a modest share of water. Four towns, three heroes, and a number of dwellings, mines, and creature banks are spread across the level. Among the placed artifacts are the Sword of Judgement and the Dragonbone Greaves, and scattered wandering stacks include Hydras, Demons, and Fire Elementals.
