French Provinces is an extra large 144 by 144 map with an underground level, played on Normal difficulty for up to eight players, all of whom can be human, with no teams. Each seat plays a different town type: Inferno, Tower, Necropolis, Rampart, Castle, Stronghold, Dungeon and Fortress. Victory requires defeating all enemies, and a player loses once all their towns and heroes are gone. Rock covers about half the terrain, with water around twelve percent, lava about seven percent and subterranean ground six percent. The map holds 24 towns and 79 mines, along with a Grail, a single seer hut, eight monoliths and portals, and 74 random monster stacks. Several artifacts are placed on the map, including the Endless Sack of Gold and the Golden Bow, and strong wandering monsters such as Archangels, Arch Devils and Titans appear among the encounters.
