Each of the eight player colors stands in for a European nation, and the Grail lies in the territory of Russia. The Baltic states, several Central European lands, the Benelux countries, Switzerland and Italy are neutral. Up to eight humans can play, with no teams and no computer-only seats, and every faction is random. About 37 percent of the map is water and the rest is grass. Victory requires defeating all enemies, and a player loses by losing every town and hero. The map holds 19 towns, 79 random monster stacks, 86 mines and 18 monoliths and portals. Placed artifacts include the Sword of Hellfire and the Ring of Infinite Gems, along with two random artifacts.
