The eight factions are Castle, Rampart, Necropolis, Tower, Stronghold, Inferno, Fortress, and Dungeon. Aeric I holds the center of Viandaria, a land short on minerals but rich and well placed, and his vassals have now turned against him. Victory requires defeating all enemies, and a player loses by losing every town and hero. The map holds 21 towns, 14 heroes, 78 mines, and 13 creature banks, along with wandering Earth Elementals and Infernal Troglodytes and placed artifacts such as the Orb of the Firmament. Water covers about 18 percent of the terrain.
