Contested Territory is an extra large underground-enabled map of 144 by 144 tiles, set in the northern lands of Erathia after the wars have ended. Eight colors compete, with one human player and seven computer-controlled opponents, grouped into five teams. The factions in play are Castle, Tower, Inferno, Rampart, Dungeon, Necropolis, Fortress and Stronghold, and victory requires defeating all enemies. A player loses by losing all towns and heroes. The map holds 24 towns and six placed heroes, with roaming Fire Elementals, Red Dragons and Black Dragons among the wandering forces. Players will find 120 mines, 10 creature banks, 12 monoliths and portals, and the Grail, which the author's account says was lost somewhere in the region. Water covers about 13 percent of the terrain, and rock is the most common surface.
