Check Mate is an extra large, surface-level map for four players, all of whom may be human, with no teams and random factions for each side. The land is mostly snow, lava, rough ground and grass, with no water. Victory requires defeating every enemy, and a player is eliminated once they lose all towns and heroes. The map contains twelve towns and four starting heroes, along with roaming stacks such as Hobgoblins, Diamond Golems and Arch Mages. Dwellings hold creatures ranging from Monks and Genies to Pit Fiends and Gorgons. Eight artifacts are placed on the map, including the Spyglass and the Helm of the Alabaster Unicorn, and there are forty-two mines, eight seer huts and fourteen monoliths and portals. The author describes it as a final push against three rivals to finish them off.
