Before The Dawn is an Extra Large underground map for two players, with a 144 by 144 playing area, designed for the In the Wake of Gods version of the game and rated Expert. Only one player can be human, while the Red side is controlled by the computer. Red plays Necropolis and Blue plays Tower, with no teams set. A player wins by defeating all enemies, and a player loses by losing all towns and heroes. Grass, dirt, lava and swamp make up most of the ground, and water covers about seven percent. The map holds 48 towns and 9 heroes, along with 143 mines, 35 creature banks, and 31 monoliths and portals. Wandering monsters include Azure Dragons and Phoenixes, and the Grail is placed on the map. The author describes a dark underworld where the player must find a route to the enemy and halt their constant assaults.
