Battles is a large underground map measuring 108 by 108, built for the Shadow of Death expansion and played at Normal difficulty. Four players take part, with one human seat and the other three colors run by the computer. There are no teams. The factions are Castle for the human-controlled Blue, Necropolis for Red, Inferno for Tan, and Dungeon for Green. The goal is to carry a specific artifact back to your castle, while losing a particular hero ends the game in defeat. Terrain is mostly rock, with rough ground, grass and subterranean areas making up much of the rest, and only a sliver of water. Scattered across the map are twelve towns, sixteen monoliths and portals, forty-one mines, two seer huts, and the Grail. Wandering stacks of undead and demonic units roam the paths, and many artifacts lie in the open.
