The Heroes of Might and Magic III scenario editor allows cartographers to construct custom landscapes, place towns, creatures, and artifacts, script timed events, and establish unique victory and loss conditions.
1. How to Start the Editor
Depending on the version of the game installed, the map editor executable resides directly in the root of your game installation directory:
- Horn of the Abyss Editor:
The official HotA editor is actively maintained, supporting Cove and Factory factions, expanded map sizes (H, XH, G), and customized victory/loss parameters.<Game-Folder>\h3hota_maped.exe - Original Shadow of Death / Complete Editor:
The classic editor created by New World Computing for standard Complete / SoD scenarios.<Game-Folder>\h3maped.exe - HotA Campaign Editor:
Starting from version 1.7.0, an updated campaign editor is included in HotA to construct custom branching campaign storylines (per HotA FAQ Question 20).<Game-Folder>\h3hota_camped.exe
Troubleshooting Editor Launch & Display:
- Fixing Blurry UI on Modern Displays: As documented in Question 34 of the official HotA FAQ, the editor is not adapted for High DPI scaling above 100%. To resolve blurriness:
- Right-click
h3hota_maped.exeand select Properties. - Go to the Compatibility tab and click Change high DPI settings.
- Check both checkboxes (Program DPI and High DPI scaling override).
- Click OK and apply settings.
- Right-click
- Launch or Save Failure: Per Questions 27 and 28 of the HotA FAQ, avoid installing the game into system-protected folders like
C:\Program Files\. If the editor fails to launch or cannot save files, run the editor with the “Run as administrator” option.
2. Understanding Map Format Versions
Every .h3m file begins with a binary header byte specifying its format version. Scenarios cannot be loaded by older game engines that predate that format.
The Restoration of Erathia
The original 1999 format. Supports 8 core factions, standard heroes, base artifacts, and map sizes S through XL.
Browse The Restoration of Erathia Maps »Armageddon's Blade
Adds the elemental Conflux faction, new campaign heroes, specialized artifacts, and adventure objects.
Browse Armageddon's Blade Maps »The Shadow of Death
The definitive classic format. Introduces combination artifacts (such as the Cloak of the Undead King and Armor of the Damned) and hero level caps.
Browse The Shadow of Death Maps »In the Wake of Gods
Community expansion format powered by the Event-Related Model (ERM) scripting engine, tier 8 creatures, and custom commander units.
Browse In the Wake of Gods Maps »Horn of the Abyss
The modern tournament standard. Introduces Cove and Factory towns, Wasteland terrain, Huge/Extra Huge/Giant map sizes, relaxed object limits, and custom victory conditions.

According to the official Horn of the Abyss Documentation, the HotA editor significantly relaxes object constraints found in the original 1999 editor:
- Total Objects: The maximum object limit is raised from 32,767 to 64,500.
- Creature Generators: The original ceiling of 144 creature generators per scenario has been completely removed.
- Mines: The limit of 144 mines per scenario has been removed.
- Seer Huts: The cap of 48 Seer Huts has been removed.
- Black Markets: The limit of 32 Black Markets has been removed.
- Pandora’s Boxes & Events: The individual caps of 200 have been replaced with a combined ceiling of 20,000.
- Terrain Placement: Most objects can now be placed on any terrain (excluding rock and water triggers on dry land).
4. Where the Editor Saves Maps
When you choose File → Save in either h3hota_maped.exe or h3maped.exe, the editor defaults to saving into the game’s scenario directory:
<Game-Folder>\Maps\<ScenarioName>.h3mOnce saved inside Maps\, the scenario is immediately indexed and available for selection when starting a new game.
